Purpose and Direction

Think about your life for a moment…  What would a fulfilling life be like for you?  Whatever answer comes to mind, notice that the question takes you deeper than simply asking “What do you want?”  Most people often have general sense of what a fulfilling life might look like.  It is rich, full and satisfying.  It is a life of choice and quality, balance the way they like.

Often when people think about living a fulfilling life, they are looking for ways to have a fulfilling life.  So they look at what they have… and what they don’t have… and see a gap… and then look for things to fill the gap… looking for that something they need to have in their life.  That “something” can be the obvious: a higher-paying job, a holiday home, a successful business.  This search can also focus on less tangible things: a wonderful marriage or a promotion.  Unfortunately, having things is momentary and the satisfaction can be fleeting.  A different approach could be to look at what it would take to be fulfilled.  This approach implies that the possibility for fulfilment is available not just for today but for the rest of our lives.

A life of purpose is another way to capture the essence of what it means to be fully alive.  To be living life intentionally, to be making choices that increase the value of life to self and others, is a description of being fulfilled today and every day.

Fulfilment and direction are both intensely personal and constantly evolving.  What was fulfilling or seemed purposeful at twenty-five may have lost its fascination by thirty-five; the empire-building passion of thirty-five may give way to a search for inner serenity by forty-five.  Whatever the vision; whatever the goal, a life of purpose and direction, that personal focus is available to everyone.
